What are Local Experts?
You are! For each unit in 6th grade science, students have a final project that requires them to think from the perspective of a professional, for example, designing a wind turbine that will power a small town. For each of these projects, I look for local experts among students' talented family members who have professional experience related to our project. The local expert joins us in class for one day while we are working on our projects, and provides job-specific criteria that students should think about when designing their final project.
What does that look like in action? For the wind turbine project, the local expert could be an electrician, lineman, civil engineer, electrical engineer, real estate agent, city planner, or elected official, or anyone who works for a public Utility. Each of these jobs (and more!) have experience that would inform the students' wind turbine design. For example, a real estate agent could share with students some common concerns that home-buyers have about wind turbines, and someone who is a customer service associate at Eversource could share with students how their company is changing to include renewable energy. |
Can I be a Local Expert?
Yes! No matter what your profession or life experience is, you have something valuable to share with my class. Throughout the year I hope to represent trades, business, STEM professions, arts, research, medical professions, customer service, public service, and more. 6th graders are just beginning to picture themselves as adults - I hope this program will introduce them to many different career paths. In order to choose the right path for them, they first have to know what each one is all about!
